The champagne is decapitated at 12:20 p.m. - the election thriller has come to an end: near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Chris Brennan, a passionate Republican, celebrates Joe Biden's win.

Chris Brennan

"I'm finally going to sleep, I'm going to have a hot shower, just sit in the shower for 45 minutes. And I'm going to give my daughter the biggest hug. Hug my wife. Because this is a great day for America."

It's been five nerve-wracking days - for Chris Brennan and the world.

A review.

It was already clear in the early hours of November 4th that the election was going to be a tremendous match - and Donald Trump probably didn't want to leave the White House without a fight.

Donald Trump, US President

"This is a fraud against the American public and shameful for our country. We were ready to win this election. Frankly, we have already won it."

While the states are being counted feverishly in the course of the day, the two political camps are irreconcilable.

Biden supporters demonstrate against the US president in Philadelphia.

The following day, Trump supporters march in Harrisburg.

The more states the US president loses, the less grounded the allegations become.

Trump supporters

"They are trying to steal votes. Corruption, lies, over lies. Enough!"

"Joe Biden is a piece of shit. In a miraculous way, random ballots suddenly appear. I'm against that."

"I think it's a shame what the Democrats did with this election. With the postal vote and the fraud that resulted from it."

Pennsylvania is playing a key role these days: Trump leads here on Wednesday morning after the election with 600,000 votes.

But almost two million postal ballot papers have not yet been counted at this point.

On Friday, the lead shrinks to less than 80,000 votes - and Chris Brennan's nerves are tense.

Brennan has been a member of the Republican Party since he was five years old.

But the historian did not want to support Trump from the start.

Four years ago he voted for Hillary Clinton, this time he voted for Joe Biden.

Chris Brennan

"I am for arms, for the second amendment. I am for the protection of unborn life. I support a lean government and low taxes. But as a conservative I also support institutions and value traditions. And this person does not have the traditions respected, who we have cherished across party lines for 244 years. I've never voted for a Democrat in any office. Whether mayor, in the commune or in Congress. I've been a staunch Republican all my life - until Mr. Trump came into office. To me, he's not a real Republican. "

The Brennans have pizza and brownies when Trump appears in front of the press for the first time after a 40-hour break.

Wife Amy, daughter Marion and Jane the dog have gathered in front of the television.

Chris Brennan's pulse now seems to be 180.

Chris Brennan

"If you don't mind, I'll comment on the speech, it drives me crazy. And my wife is crazy that I can't listen to Trump without throwing something in."

Donald Trump

"you count ballot papers without postmark"

Chris Brennan

"No. Not true. It must be postmarked."

Donald Trump

"There's no postmark."

Chris Brennan

"Yes, they do."

Donald Trump

"There have been a few disturbing irregularities across the country."

Chris Brennan

"Disturbing. They're all on drugs, these weirdos. Sorry."

Chris Brennan

"Do you like James Brown? He wrote this great song:" Talking loud and saying nothing ". That was exactly what it was: Talking loud and saying nothing.

Amy Brennan

"When Biden becomes president, Trump's people have on their minds: It was a fraud."

Chris Brennan

"Exactly. That's very disappointing. And again it's not about evidence or facts or anything concrete. It's more like, 'A guy I know has a boyfriend and his sister has a cousin, whose aunt has a nephew, and whose roommate at university has a cousin who told me that. '

I mean, there is nothing. Show me the evidence. "

Day three ends with Trump's baseless claims.

There is no winner.

24 hours later the Brennan family is back in front of the television.

In Pennsylvania, Joe Biden's lead grows to 22,000 votes during the day - if he wins the state, he is president.

But still not all postal ballot papers have been counted.

Even so, the Democrat appeared before the press at around 10:00 p.m.

Joe Biden, Democratic Presidential Candidate

"Dear Americans, the final winner has not yet been determined, but the numbers speak for themselves. We will win this race.

Chris Brennan

"Come closer, Amy."

Joe Biden, Democratic presidential candidate

"We all know the tension is high, it's normal after a tough election like this one. But we have to stay calm. Be patient. We have to trust the process and count all votes."

Chris Brennan

"He did what a leader has to do: he instilled calm and patience. He talked about unity. That's exactly what we need after a tough campaign. We want to get together. And I mean - what a Contrast with Donald Trump's speech yesterday. "

my Brennan

"I'm so ready."

Chris Brennan

"I'm tired and ready. It's funny, every morning Marion asks me, 'Daddy, who's the president? What happened?'

Yes, it's a long process. But I think this weekend, one way or another, we'll get a clearer idea. Even if Mr. Trump doesn't believe it yet, the rest of the country knows what's going to happen. But yes, we do will sleep well when it's done. "

Redemption comes on day five: Joe Biden collects the decisive votes in Pennsylvania.

At 11:25 am, the news channel CNN proclaimed him the next US president.

CNN

"We can now declare the winner of the presidential election: It's Joe Biden."

Donald Trump is playing golf at this point - he does not acknowledge the defeat.

Chris Brennan can now breathe deeply in his living room: Trump is history.

The Republican dares to look ahead.

Chris Brennan

"I'm a Conservative. There will surely be things Joe Biden will do as soon as Donald Trump is in the rearview mirror that I disagree with. And I honestly look forward to it as a Conservative in March or April then to say, "Oh, I don't think that's a good thing! It'll feel good again, being a Republican."

At 8:45 p.m., Joe Biden gives his victory speech in Wilmington, Delaware.

Joe Biden, US President-elect

"Folks, I am a proud Democrat. But I will rule as the American President. I will work as hard for the people who voted me as I did for those who didn't."

A new chapter in US history begins.
