US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said tonight (Tuesday) that the US State Department has approved the sale of advanced military equipment to the United Arab Emirates in the amount of $ 23.37 billion.
He said the deal includes up to 50 F-35s, up to 18 unmanned gliders and a package of air-to-air and ground-to-air weapons.
Israel initially opposed the sale of the planes for fear it would harm its military superiority in the region, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the United States had promised to maintain it.
The deal also sparked a war of accusations in the government, with Defense Minister Bnei Gantz accusing Netanyahu of knowing about the negotiations to sell the F-35s between the United States and the United Arab Emirates, but hiding him from the defense establishment.

Until now, the United States has prevented the sale of the F-35 to Arab countries due to the restrictions that are supposed to maintain Israel's military advantage.
The Air Force currently owns 24 such aircraft, and is expected to purchase a similar number in the future up to the size of 50 F-35s.
