Baha'i Hariri, the son of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, says Lebanon and Israel need to resolve disputes on the maritime and land borders and move forward with a peace agreement, and calls on his brother Saad Hariri, who is now forming a new government, not to reach any political deal with Hezbollah. .

Hariri made the remarks in an interview with journalist Barak Ravid on the American news site Axios.

Rafik Hariri was one of the most prominent politicians and businessmen in the history of Lebanon.

On February 14, 2005, a few months after resigning as prime minister under pressure from the Syrian regime, he was killed in a terrorist attack in Beirut.

An international tribunal ruled last August that Hezbollah operatives were behind the assassination.

After the assassination, Rafik Hariri's youngest son, Saad, became his political successor - while the eldest son, Baha, focused on the business world.

Baha Hariri has not been involved in Lebanese politics and in recent years has lived outside Lebanon.

He manages a large investment fund and his fortune is estimated at more than two billion dollars.

In recent months he has begun to increase his public activity and has supported several civic organizations that have led the protests in Lebanon and the calls for reforms in the country.

"My father was a man of peace," Hariri said in an interview.

"Lebanon and Israel have disagreements that need to be resolved, but at the end of the day we need to achieve peace. I want my children to live in peace and not in war. I believe a large part of the Lebanese public believes that. It was part of what Rafik Hariri taught us."

Under Lebanese law, Israel is defined as an enemy state.

Therefore, this statement on the part of one of the members of the most important political dynasty in Lebanon is very unusual.

Baha Hariri's brother - Saad, who may soon return to the post of Lebanese prime minister - is known for his anti-Israel stances.

A few weeks ago, in parallel with the signing of the normalization agreements that Israel signed with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, direct negotiations between Israel and Lebanon began through American mediation for the first time in 30 years. Negotiations mark the maritime border between the two countries, in an attempt to resolve disputes The natural gas in the eastern Mediterranean is valued at billions of dollars.

In an interview, Baha Hariri said he believes the negotiations between Lebanon and Israel on the maritime border are good and stressed that he hopes the move is related to change in the region following the normalization agreements. , Explained to Axios.

"The border is like an opening wound that gives Hezbollah room for maneuver"

According to Hariri, Lebanon and Israel should also resolve the disputes over the land border, especially on Mount Dov - a dispute that Hezbollah uses as a pretext for friction with Israel.

"The land border is like an open wound that gives Hezbollah room for maneuver," Hariri said.

The UN ruled in 2000 that the Shebaa Farms (Mount Dov) is part of Syria.

The Syrians have left the issue open because of the situation with Hezbollah. "

In an interview, Baha Hariri criticizes his brother Saad, who is negotiating a government with Hezbollah.

He notes that he decided to step up his activities and public statements because he felt the situation in Lebanon was critical and after the explosion in Lebanon decided he could not sit idly by.

However, he stressed that he does not intend to run for any political position in Lebanon, but only to be active in the public arena.

"At the time of Rafik Hariri, Hezbollah was not in the government. Until his death, Hezbollah was not part of any government," he said in an interview and sent a message to his brother.

"I think forming a government with Hezbollah is not a mistake - it is a big mistake."

He said a government with Hezbollah ministers would not have the support of the international community or the Gulf states, and would therefore have difficulty coping with the deep political and economic crisis in which Lebanon finds itself.

"Hezbollah and its supporters have reached a point of no return in terms of their failure to run the country and they must step aside and let people with a clean past save the country. We have many such people - including Lebanese living abroad," he says

when asked if he is disappointed that his brother runs "Politically with Hezbollah, he replied:" I love my brother and I care about him, but the political differences between us are very deep. Hezbollah should be treated as a terrorist organization. For me it is clear that anyone who agrees to form a government controlled by Hezbollah is not doing the right thing. ".
