Denmark's plan to eradicate its entire wintering population following the discovery of a mutation in the corona virus among them is facing legal obstacles.
This is after the government admitted that it has no legal basis for an order to destroy the entire population of miners, numbering 17 million individuals, making it one of the largest in the world.
The instruction was given last week, in light of the fear that the mutation of the virus could impair the effectiveness of future vaccines.
The minority government in Denmark, led by the Social Democratic Party, today (Tuesday) introduced speedy legislation to back the move, but the opposition said they would not allow the draft law to circumvent the legal procedure which usually lasts 30 days.

Opposition groups say the destruction of healthy mink should not begin before the transfer of compensation plans to the owners and workers of some 1,100 farms.
Environment and Food Minister Mogens Jensen said the government expressed regret over the lack of clarity on the issue.
The government has said it will take care of compensating the miners and that it will continue to work to pass legislation as soon as possible.
Following the development in Denmark, the Ministry of Health announced yesterday that anyone who returns to Israel from the country will enter isolation.
The ministry clarified that the likelihood that a patient carrying the mutation had arrived in Israel was low, but added that "we are taking extra care."
