A Mexican journalist has been shot dead in the center of the country while reporting the discovery of human remains on the side of the road in the city of Salamanca.

Israel and Essex Rangel worked at the local site El Salamentino, and he arrived on Monday to investigate reports of human remains, apparently before security forces.

Police officers who arrived at the scene found the 31-year-old journalist seriously injured by gunfire, and he died a few hours later in the hospital.

The governor of the state of Guanajuato, where the city is located, ordered the attorney general to investigate the murder and promised that the authorities would protect and support the family.

Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists, more than a hundred of whom have been murdered since 2000. Many of them have reported corruption or drug cartels.

The site where he worked said he fell victim to a "cowardly and shocking attack while performing his honorable job as a journalist."

Other media outlets in the country also expressed shock at the murder of Essex, who was driving to the scene in a car with the site’s logo and therefore was supposed to be identified as a reporter, the site said to El Salamentino.

Sites of human remains and mass graves are no exception in the landscape of Guanajuato.

Less than two weeks ago, the remains of 59 bodies - most of them young people - were found in unmarked tombs in Salvatore, just an hour’s drive from Salamanca.

Violence in the country has escalated after a war broke out between two powerful cartels - Santa Rosa de Lima and the new generation Halisco.

The cartels are mainly involved in stealing fuel from the major oil pipelines passing through the country as well as selling drugs to local residents and blackmailing business owners.
