(CNN Spanish) -

The National Health Surveillance Agency of Brazil (Anvisa) confirmed this Wednesday in a statement that it authorized the resumption of the phase 3 clinical study of the coronavirus vaccine CoronaVac, developed by the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac Biotech.

The announcement comes a day after the tests were ordered to be suspended for a "serious adverse event" that required a better assessment of data and risk.

According to the statement, Anvisa continues with the investigation, but clarified that the suspension "does not necessarily mean that the product under investigation is not of quality, safety or efficacy."

The Agency indicated that, out of respect for the privacy of the volunteers, it does not report the nature of the serious adverse event.

Anvisa said Tuesday that the incident was reported on October 29.

A police report seen by CNN Brasil, a CNN affiliate, said the cause of death was suicide.

In addition, a source from the Sao Paulo government told CNN that the cause of death appeared to be suicide, but added that they are still awaiting the official toxicology report.

The director of Brazil's Butantan Biomedical Institute, Dimas Covas, as well as the Secretary of State of Sao Paulo, Jean Gorinchteyn, and the Chinese biotechnology firm Sinovac said on Tuesday that the adverse event was not related in any way to the trial of the vaccine.

Sinovac's trials in Brazil began in late July, with 9,000 volunteers in five states plus the capital.
