When bedtime comes, Norbert Seidl gets scared every evening.

For over a year his house in Karlsfeld has been vibrating and humming.

Karlsfeld -

Pleasant living environment, quiet location, good neighborhood - Norbert Seidl (56) had been living happily in his semi-detached house on

Schützenstrasse in Karlsfeld

for decades

.

But then they came: the

constant vibrations

and

humming noises.

Since

summer 2019

and to this day, they have been plaguing Norbert Seidl and his partner Monika Schmucker (52), who lives in the house, constantly.

“They don't cause any problems during the day,” says the works electrician at the City of Munich, “but it's dramatic at night!”

Strange noise robs couple of sleep in Karlsfeld (Dachau)

Dramatic because the emissions are increased by the false floor in the old building.

So much so that "a health impairment due to sleep disorders and meanwhile muscle and limb pain has set in," says Nobert Seidl.

Karlsfelders swap their mattresses - but that doesn't bring any relief either

The homeowner and his partner swapped their

spring mattresses for mattresses made of cold foam.

"The innerspring and the false bottom had set themselves in resonance vibrations, making sleep impossible," said Seidl.

It did get better, not least because, in addition to new mattresses, he also placed an anti-vibration mat under the bed frame, but the vibrations and humming were "unbearable because of the long duration," said the 56-year-old.

Detective work with the neighbors: The noise is not there with concrete ceilings

But where do the unbearable vibrations and noises come from?

"In order to be able to exclude and limit sources of interference, we have already

contacted

all of our

immediate neighbors

, researched possible causes together and even switched off the power." The conclusion after the "detective work": Seidl and his neighbors noticed that the vibration and hum in houses with concrete ceilings - such as those in the neighboring semi-detached house - cannot be felt or heard.

Only: They did not find out where the disturbances ultimately came from.

Strange noise in Karlsfeld: Suspicion falls on pumps - but ...

Seidl has one suspicion:

the work that has been going on since spring 2019 for the new building of the primary school around 240 meters away.

Groundwater pumps were in use there, as well as drying devices.

The 56-year-old wanted to know exactly and turned on the Dachau district office.

Employees from the technical environmental protection department went on site and investigated.

The result was sobering for the troubled homeowner.

The groundwater pumps only ran until February 2019, so they were already switched off by the time the disruptions began.

And the drying devices on the construction site have only been running since the end of October, as District Office press spokesman Wolfgang Reichelt assures.

“The source that the house owner gave us is actually ruled out.” After all: According to Reichelt, his authority, after consulting the architect's office responsible for building the school, was able to arrange for the drying devices to be “set up vibration-dampening”.

But if it's not the school construction site, who or what?

Strange noise at night - Expert: Anything is possible

Anything is possible, so the tenor of an expert.

Dr.

med.

Johannes Mayer from Friedberg is a doctor and specialist in the field of harmful emissions.

He mentions fans, ventilation systems and motors, for example.

Such sources are often in the immediate vicinity and one does not suspect that.

But they could be the cause of a vibration or hum.

Or biogas systems or the ventilation systems in cattle stalls, "they can be felt over a distance of up to one and a half kilometers," says Mayer.

He refers to methods with which one can precisely distinguish whether it is infrasound or low-frequency noise.

If you know that, you can infer the device.

“But these measurements are complex and very expensive,” says Mayer.

Norbert Seidl and his partner are now "completely helpless and helpless", as they say.

Seidl even thought of moving away and renting out his house.

But: He couldn't expect a tenant to live in a house where it vibrates and hums incessantly.
