The Constitution Committee convenes today (Wednesday) to continue work and prepare for the second and third readings of the Green Islands Bill.

The bill will allow the government to declare the city of Eilat and the hotel area in the Dead Sea a "special tourist area", where hotels and other tourism services will be opened, and entry will be allowed in the presentation of a negative corona result.

According to the updated wording distributed to the committee members, the chairman of the Constitution Committee, MK Yaakov Asher (Torah Judaism) agreed to reduce and waive the extension of the law to other areas in the country, following the Ministry of Health's demand that the law apply only to Eilat and the Dead Sea.

The coalition estimates that the law will also reach a final vote in the plenum today.

Originally, this was a government bill by Tourism Minister Orit Farkash HaCohen, only earlier this week, the Knesset's Constitution Committee expanded the law so that it could also apply to other areas in the country.

As a result, Health Minister Yuli Edelstein opposed the change and withdrew the law in the middle of a vote on it in the Knesset plenum.

In response, MK Eitan Ginzburg resubmitted the bill as a private member's bill, and it was approved on first reading yesterday. This morning, a meeting was held between Health Minister Yuli Edelstein, Constitution Committee Chairman Yaakov Asher and the liaison minister between the government and the Knesset.
