Nine months have passed since the corona virus began to spread in Israel.

Meanwhile, two waves of disease erupted and two closures were imposed in an attempt to eradicate the plague.

Due to the stringent restrictions imposed during the holidays, the number of active patients has dropped to at least ten thousand and hospitals have begun closing Corona wards.

However, with the entry into force of the reliefs and ahead of the impending winter, the government and the Ministry of Health are disturbed by a third wave - and the option of a night curfew is already on the table, despite doubts about its effectiveness.

According to the Ministry of Health, the first wave began on March 15 - when it was decided to close the schools - and lasted until April 30.

The second wave of morbidity began on September 1, and its end is seen right these days.

Although the second wave was characterized by a broader outbreak of morbidity than its predecessor, and as a result the number of patients with a serious condition also increased, in other respects there was actually an improvement.

Now, the health care system continues to learn and gain experience in dealing with the corona.

Despite the fear of another outburst, there are also those who express optimism.

Morbidity data

The differences between the waves of morbidity can be clearly seen in the data of those hospitalized.

If at the peak of the first wave there were 805 new hospitalized in one day, while in the current wave the number of daily hospitalized reached 1,880.

Even in the number of respirators and patients with a serious condition, there was a considerable gap between the two outbreaks of the disease: if in mid-April the number was 192 critically ill, in October the figure reached 897.

Also, the peak of respirators in April was 137, compared to October, when the highest number of respirators was 234.

Although in the current wave the number of respirators has increased, when examining their rate out of the total severe corona patients it is a decrease of almost 70%.

The decline occurred thanks to technological means and treatment methods that became more effective in the second wave period.

treatment duration

The uncertainty in the first wave led to the automatic hospitalization of almost every verified patient, even in the mildest cases.

Today, only patients with moderate to severe clinical symptoms are hospitalized and many seek home treatment.

Also, with the outbreak of the crisis in March the state still did not provide hotel services to isolation debtors, so many were hospitalized just to keep them away from their surroundings.

There is currently no such phenomenon, and hospitals can focus on the medical aspect only.

The director of Corona's department at Wolfson, Dr. Doron Menachem, described that hospital care during the first outbreak reflected the general uncertainty that prevailed at the time. "More effective," he told Walla! NEWS. "Giving a healing plasma (the fluid in the blood vessels that contains the antibodies to the disease - MK), which of course was not in the first wave - shortens the disease and reduces its intensity."

"A welcome experience of more than half a year."

The director of Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon, Prof. Yaniv Scherer, explained that "unlike the first wave, in the second wave we hospitalized patients whose clinical condition was defined as moderate-severe, we combined a very wide use of" high-flow " Which prevented the deterioration of many patients into a state of invasive soul.

Our medical teams have acquired considerable clinical experience, on a wide scale of clinical manifestations. "

"Significant clinical experience."

Prof. Scherer

Scope of tests

Prof. Scherer pointed to another gap between the waves - the tests.

In April, only symptomatic patients with a likelihood of infection (such as returning from abroad) were tested for corona. Today, there is a sweeping test for the virus in any mild clinical suspicion and in any case of exposure to the patient even without developing symptoms. At the height of the second wave.

Another difference between the waves lies in the test kits themselves. In the first wave there were few tests in the country, whereas in the last month there is a huge amount of tests that are ready for use.

Mortality rates

As for mortality, data from the Ministry of Health show that the peak of mortality in the first wave was on April 8 with 13 deaths in one day, whereas the mortality wave in the second wave hit most strongly when on September 30 there were 49 deaths in one day.

Every April, 203 corona patients died in Israel, and in October, another 910 died.

According to the Ministry of Health, despite the fact that Israel led the second wave in morbidity rates in relation to population size, the mirror picture is correct: in Israel mortality from the lowest corona in the world - only 0.7% of patients, while in the United States it stands at 2.75%. In the UK 6.7% and in Italy the mortality rate - 10%.

But Israel is the only country in the world that calculates the percentage of deaths from the number of patients from Corona, while in the rest of the world the mortality rate is in relation to the deaths in the general population and not just from the patients.

When comparing the number of deaths in Israel to the population, Israel is deteriorating greatly.

For example, the infection that was in Russia in the second wave, calculated from July, was 20% of the infection wave that was in Israel.

Mortality in Russia is currently half the mortality rate in the State of Israel.

In Israel, there are currently 239 deaths per million people in the second wave, while in Europe there are 98 deaths per million people.

In other words, in the percentage of deaths, Israel is also at the top of the dubious list and has 2.5 times more deaths than in European countries.

In the second wave, there are only three countries that have experienced Israel's mortality.

Towards a third wave?

Dr. Menachem explained that the last few months have allowed the hospital to prepare and enlarge the ward, and even prepare for a third wave of illness. He said, “Today we can monitor the patients.

We divided the teams in terms of hierarchy to give the treatment the maximum and reduce the load of the crews so that they can withstand the load over time. "

However, it noted that there are still many things we do not know about the origins and claimed that it is more complex than seasonal flu." The virus is very sophisticated way to control In him and neutralize him is very difficult.

The best way is for people to learn to obey instructions.

I really hope we do not reach a third closure, "he hoped.

"The best way - to obey instructions."

Israel is already preparing for the third wave that is about to come along with the winter sickness.

On the other hand, senior officials in the Ministry of Health tell Walla!

NEWS that further sickle and frame can be avoided thanks to the conclusions drawn so far.

Between the first and second wave, the Ministry of Health decided to close the ministry's central control center as well as the control centers of the local authorities, claiming that the virus was behind us. The epidemiological researchers have very little work to do, and the goal is that with the first signs of the third wave, Alon Headquarters and the governments around the country will be ready for action and there will be no need to re-establish them and train more staff.

The Ministry of Health is broadcasting optimism about the third wave, but at the moment the local authorities have not yet received the powers to deal with the crisis, and the political confrontations keep us away from the decision-making process.
