The Americans in the district were under high tension for a day.

Now there is relief: your favorite, Joe Biden, is the new president.

Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen

- When the result was certain, Rose Sasse puffed hard after days of tension: Late on Saturday afternoon in Germany, the first media announced Joe Biden as the election winner in the race for the US presidency.

It was preceded by a close race - with exhausting uncertainty.

“We were really nervous.

Mainly because the counting has only progressed in such small steps and it was very close for a long time, ”says the American who has lived with her German husband in Reichersbeuern for about ten years.

On election night - US citizens were asked to vote on Tuesday - it looked like the incumbent Donald Trump would win.

Only the counting of the postal votes, which in some states traditionally may only be counted after the local voters, did the pendulum swing for his democratic challenger.

"We are very happy that it turned out that way," says Sasse, whose television ran the news channel CNN for days.

What's going on in the Supreme Court?

However, Sasse is not entirely sure about Biden's upcoming presidency: “I believe that the election will be decided by the Supreme Court.” The president's campaign team announced several times that it would involve the Supreme Court - because of previously unproven allegations of fraud against the Democrats.

“I don't trust the Supreme Court,” says Sasse.

During his tenure, President Trump filled several judge posts with Republican supporters, one of them just days before the presidential election.

“A lot can happen there,” fears the family mother.

The Waldramerin Angelika Sesto sees the situation as a little more relaxed: “I don't think it will be easy to contest the election result.” She continues to fear “exciting weeks”.

But in the end, the Democratic candidate Biden won in too many states, so that a challenge will not be successful in their eyes.

"It would be a grand gesture now if the president admits his defeat," says Sesto.

However, incumbent Trump has so far made no move.

Nobody believes in a normal handover

"I found it very exciting to see how people who were not interested in politics suddenly saw how corrupt America is," says Kiernan Leahy from Bad Tölz.

He was very relieved that Biden won, "but three million votes is not a lot, and it's terrifying how much Trump got".

However, he strongly doubts that Trump will actually contest Biden's victory.

Most of the Republican politicians have withdrawn, he no longer has political support.

"But since it's Trump, I can imagine that shortly before the end of his term of office he will do something that hinders Joe Biden very much or makes it harder for him," speculates Leahy.

Before the election, some observers had expected that extremist Trump supporters could feel called upon to put up strong opposition to the election result if the president were voted out of office.

"I also feared that there could be serious riots," says Angelika Sesto.

So far, however, the situation has been relatively peaceful.

The boisterous celebrations of Biden fans can mainly be seen on television.

The Waldramer woman is not worried about her relatives in the northern east coast state of Maine - Biden won the electoral votes here with a comfortable margin.

A president who speaks full sentences

Michelle Calabro, who has relatives in New York, isn't worried either.

The election result for Biden was too clear for that in this state as well.

"But I can imagine that the current calm will change," says the woman from Wackersberg, who has lived in Germany for over 30 years.

"Donald Trump will not resign without a big row." Nevertheless, she looks forward to the presidency of the Democrat Biden: "It is incredibly relieving to have a president again who can speak in full sentences." Even if the election result is "unbelievable “It was an important signal for the USA and for democracy.” Biden, who was 78 years old when he took office, will probably not be “the very best president in history”, “but a huge step forward”.

The Tölzerin Carmen Feliciano is also hoping for this.

She followed the first speech of the President-elect after the victory of Joe Biden became known "very satisfied and relieved".

The fact that the election winner announced that he “wanted to unite and not split further and would like to be a president for all Americans” fills them “with great hope”.

The fact that the former Vice-President is already getting down to business now and is planning, for example, the Corona policy, “gives me hope for a good presidency”.

During the counting marathon in the States - "I checked my cell phone every few minutes for anything new and turned on the television that night" - Feliciano had repeatedly feared that incumbent Trump would be allowed to continue to rule.

The voters decided differently, and "a huge stone fell from her heart".
