On his ornithological walks around the city, Javier Rico is listing a list out loud.
It is the count of the birds that he finds.
“In the time that we have been, we have already identified 22 different species.
Nobody imagines the number of birds that can be seen from here ”, he assures.
Today he travels a stretch of the renatured river Manzanares, in Madrid, loaded with binoculars and a telescope.
As he explains, this is the best time of year to observe these animals.
"People believe that birds are only seen in spring and summer, when in fact they are the autumn and winter seasons when birds are seen more and better," commented this guide from a company that organizes urban excursions to teach schoolchildren to identify these winged animals.
In this installment of Vida Eco, we show some of the species that can be observed during this time of year.
Beyond the pigeons, parrots, magpies and sparrows that are used to being found in Iberian cities, the list of birds that live with humans in cities is very long.
"People don't know it, but here in Madrid you can now see seabirds, some come from as far away as Iceland," says Rico, who continues to add names to his account.
