The number of confirmed cases of Coronavirus in Portugal exceeded the 200,000 mark today, with new daily infections reaching a record high.
Reuters quoted Portuguese Health Minister Marta Temido as saying at a press conference that her country recorded 6,653 new infections, the highest daily number since the start of the pandemic, bringing the total number of infections to 204,664 cases.
"When we reach the peak of the disease, it will take weeks to see a decline in demand for hospitals, and even more weeks to reduce the number of deaths," Timido added.
The state of emergency came into effect nationwide to combat the spread of the virus on Monday, and it is scheduled to continue until the 23rd of this month, but it is possible to extend it.
