2020-11-13T19:14:50.922Z

A new tropical depression is heading towards Central America following the same trajectory as Cyclone Eta. Its rains would thus strike from Monday waterlogged lands and populations already affected.

The Honduran authorities on Friday (November 13th) ordered population evacuations in the region of San Pedro Sula, the country's second city, 180 km north of the capital, in anticipation of the threat of a second cyclone in two weeks in Central America.

The San Pedro Sula Valley was already hit hard last week by Hurricane Eta, whose heavy rains caused devastating floods and landslides, and which killed more than 200 people in Central America.

A new tropical depression is now moving towards Central America and threatening to strengthen over the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea.

This depression, which would take the name of Iota if it strengthened into a tropical storm, follows the same trajectory as Cyclone Eta.

Its rains would thus strike from Monday waterlogged lands and populations already affected.

Honduras is on "

red alert and orders forced evacuations

" with the intervention of the police and the army, said Julissa Mercado, spokesperson for Copeco, the Honduran civil protection organization.

This "

red alert is for an indefinite period

" because of the threat, she said.

Eta killed more than 60 people in Honduras and its damage affected 2.7 million people.

More than 40,000 people have had to leave their homes because of the floods and are still staying in shelters, according to the country's civil protection.
