disrupts our production by around 20%,

” explained Philippe Ludosky, head of the Nord Eau Potable agency at Société Martiniquaise des Eaux.

Rotating cuts will be put in place, the volume of water available being too low to supply the entire population.

On Friday, schools in several municipalities remained closed for lack of drinking water supply.

The pipeline which gave way carries water from the Capot River in the north of the island and serves the north, center and south of Martinique.

This important conduit was under the route of the national road 1, gutted Wednesday after a landslide, consecutive to the bad weather.

"

The pipeline could not withstand the importance of this displacement and got dislodged in a few places

", explained Marc Mongis, deputy general manager of equipment and infrastructure of the Territorial Collectivity of Martinique.

New rainy episodes to come

Martinique has been placed on yellow vigilance for rains and thunderstorms for nearly a week.

Heavy rain episodes, especially on Wednesday, have already caused significant damage in the northeast.

The impressive rising waters and subsidence of soil have left many traces on the roads and in the neighborhoods.

In Chère Epice, in Robert, the inhabitants were cut off from the world for several days, their only road having given way.

In Fonds St Jacques, in Sainte Marie, not far from the broken pipe, Lyne Eugene had to leave her house in haste: “

I was able to recover some of my belongings but as the house was sagging, I had to let the rest go.

I know that I will not be able to come back

”.

Other neighborhoods were evacuated to protect the populations.

Whole pieces of hills have come loose, soaked in water, carrying the vegetation in their fall.

200 to 300 mm of rain fell in less than a day on Wednesday.

The prefect of Martinique, Stanislas Cazelle, on Thursday launched the procedure for recognizing the state of natural disaster for six municipalities.

New intense rainy episodes are expected over the weekend.
