The head of diplomacy Arancha Gonzalez Laya will visit Senegal on Sunday 22 November and the Minister of the Interior Fernando Grande-Marlaska on Friday 20 in Morocco "

to strengthen collaboration and work jointly with Morocco to avoid these departures

" migrants, said Minister for Territorial Policy Carolina Darias from the Canaries.

Visiting the archipelago, she presented a package of measures to deal with the arrival of thousands of migrants.

The Spanish government "

wants to encourage the diplomatic channel

" so that "

no one risks their life by boarding these

makeshift

boats

", added the minister, stressing also that the government "would

insist

" on the reactivation of the expulsions of economic migrants frosts due to the pandemic.

Strengthen the capacities of the security forces

The Ministers of Foreign Affairs and the Interior had already recently visited several key countries in terms of immigration, such as Mauritania, Tunisia, Algeria, Chad and Niger.

According to Carolina Darias, the Spanish government also intends to strengthen the capacities of the Spanish security forces in the Atlantic Ocean by detaching several ships, a submarine, a plane and a helicopter.

This strategy is reminiscent of that used during the migration crisis of 2006 in the Canaries, a year in which 30,000 migrants arrived on the coasts of the archipelago.

Spain then signed treaties to curb migratory flows with Mauritania and Senegal.

For several months, African migrants have resumed the route of the Canaries in preference to the Mediterranean due to border control agreements concluded with Libya, Turkey and Morocco.

Since the start of the year, more than 16,000 migrants have landed on the archipelago, nearly ten times more than in 2009.

Arrivals have accelerated in recent weeks.

More than 2,000 migrants thus arrived last weekend.

Due to this influx, the temporary reception structure installed in the port of Arguineguín is totally saturated with migrants sleeping on the floor, a situation denounced by NGOs such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.

The government has announced the dismantling of this camp and the transfer of the reception of migrants to army land in the Canaries.
