Former head of the National Security Service in Armenia and leader of the Moledet party, Arthur Venzian, was arrested today (Saturday) on suspicion of plotting to assassinate Prime Minister Nicole Faschinian, thereby carrying out a coup.

According to a report on the Russian news site Komsomolskaya Pravda, Venetian's lawyer said security forces in the country searched the home of the parents of a former Armenian security official.

In addition, a council member in Venetian's party, Sus Akopian, wrote on his Facebook page that the state authorities are trying in every way to “decapitate” the party.

As mentioned, on Tuesday the ceasefire agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan came into force in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Following the announcement of the signing, many demonstrators took to the streets of the Armenian capital, Yerevan, and tried to break into the government building. Since then, thousands of protesters have taken to the streets of the city every day calling for opposition to Fascian's resignation.
