Nicosia-Sana
The Republic of Cyprus confirmed that the visit of the President of the Turkish regime, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, to the Varosha resort in the city of Famagusta in the northern part of the country, contradicts Security Council resolutions and represents an unprecedented provocation.
The office of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Anastasiades, said in a statement today that this visit "completely contradicts Resolutions 550 and 789 issued by the United Nations Security Council ... and undermines the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to hold an informal five-party meeting to discuss the settlement in Cyprus."
It is scheduled that Erdogan will arrive in Northern Cyprus tomorrow, where he intends to visit the coastal resort of Varosha.
The northern part of Cyprus has witnessed protests and demonstrations over the past days, to reject the interference of the Turkish regime authorities in the island’s internal affairs and to denounce Erdogan’s visit to northern Cyprus.
The Turkish army has occupied the northern part of Cyprus since 1974 when it invaded the north of the island and established the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" an entity that only Ankara recognizes.
