A Marie-Antoinette shoe acquired for 43,750 euros at auction

The price soared thanks to the “keen interest of international collectors”. The estimate of the Versailles auction house Osenat was 8,000 to 10,000 euros.


A white silk shoe that belonged to Queen Marie-Antoinette was auctioned on Sunday for 43,750 euros, announced the Versailles auction house Osenat.

This shoe is "

in silk on the front third and in kid

leather on the

back three quarters

", with "

four superimposed pleated ribbons

" on the top, a leather sole and a "

heel covered with gray patent skin

" of 4.7 cm. height, described Osenat.

It measures 22.5 cm in length, which today would roughly correspond to a size 36.

The figure of the queen of Austrian origin, beheaded under the Terror in 1793, like her husband Louis XVI, continues to fascinate the whole world.

It would have been given to Marie-Emilie Leschevin de Prévoisin, close friend of Madame Campan, the Queen's first chambermaid.

It would then have been kept from the end of the 18th century by the descendants of this woman who died in 1816, until this sale.

Thanks to the “

”, according to Osenat, the price obtained is far higher than the estimate of 8,000 to 10,000 euros.
