Spokesman for the High Representative for Security and Foreign Policy in the European Union Peter Stano criticized the provocations committed by the regime of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Cyprus and the escalation of the atmosphere of mistrust and tension between the capitals of member states and this regime.

"Our message is clear ... there is no alternative to a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem on the basis of international resolutions 550 and 789," Aki news agency quoted Stano as saying, commenting on Erdogan's recent visit to the Varosha resort in Cyprus.

The spokesman added that the countries of the Union "see Erdogan's recent behavior as a provocation, in addition to many Turkish provocations against Greece, Cyprus and the general membership of the Union, and this trend must be reversed quickly."

It is noteworthy that the leaders of the Union confirmed that they would discuss the actions of the Turkish regime in the eastern Mediterranean and the divided island of Cyprus since the Turkish invasion in 1974, during their next summit scheduled for next month to take the necessary decisions.

Erdogan continues his ambitions, provocations and his attempts to undermine the talks to reunify the two parts of the island of Cyprus, which was divided in 1974 when Turkey invaded it, and it is the only one that recognizes a Turkish Cypriot separatist state in the north called the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus", in which Ankara deploys more than 35 thousand soldiers.

The internationally recognized government of the island, based in the south of the island, accuses Erdogan of spoiling attempts to return to peace talks.
