Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called on the international community to contribute to the restoration of world heritage sites in Syria, parts of which were destroyed as a result of terrorist attacks, stressing the need to take concrete measures in this regard.
Sputnik quoted Lavrov as saying in an article marking the 75th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization “UNESCO”, “It is time for the international community under the leadership of UNESCO to take effective measures to restore the World Heritage sites in Syria that were destroyed by terrorists,” noting that “ Russia is ready to help in this matter.
On the agenda of UNESCO, Lavrov said, "The common interest of member states is to reduce the degree of politicization in the organization, which impedes its effectiveness. It is also necessary to exclude issues of regional unity and sovereignty from the agenda and to cancel the possibility of settling accounts between countries on the site of this global forum."
Extremist and terrorist organizations have systematically sabotaged, destroyed and stolen many Syrian antiquities, and the terrorist organization "ISIS" has broadcast recordings on social media sites in which extremists have appeared as they destroy archaeological sites and mausoleums in Syria and Iraq that are thousands of years old in addition to stealing what can be transferred and sold to finance terrorist operations .
