Peruvian interim President Manuel Merino announced his resignation against the backdrop of bloody protests in the country recently, according to media reports.
Merino's resignation came less than a week after taking over his new administration, following nationwide protests that called for his dismissal due to the killing of two protesters and the wounding of dozens, as the country entered a new political crisis.
The speaker of the Peruvian parliament, Luis Valdes, called for Merino's resignation, as was the mayor of Lima, Jorge Manoz, who, like Merino, belongs to the People's Action Party.
Merino took office on Tuesday after the opposition-dominated Congress voted to impeach his predecessor Martin Vizcarra over allegations he had received bribes, which he denied.
