In Peru, the Public Ministry on Monday began a preliminary investigation against former interim president Manuel Merino and officials Ántero Flores Aráoz, former president of the Council of Ministers, and Gastón Rodríguez Limo, former Minister of the Interior and lieutenant general of the Police Nacional de Perú (PNP) for the alleged crimes of abuse of authority, intentional homicide to the detriment of two dead protesters, as well as serious and minor injuries and forced disappearance to the detriment of people to be determined.

According to a statement from the Public Prosecutor's Office, these crimes were committed in the context of human rights violations.


CNN is trying to get the reaction of the three investigated.

In statements to a local media, Flores Aráoz denied political responsibility for the death of the young people.

For his part, Rodríguez Limo had denied in previous days that the police had used pellets.

The two young men who died during the protests this Saturday were identified as Jordan Inti Sotelo Camargo and Jack Bryan Pintado Sánchez.

In addition, they reported that the prosecutor in charge of the missing persons cases requested the geolocation of each one, a task that involved locating relatives to request information on telephone numbers.

Demonstrators took to the streets this Saturday in different cities of Peru to express their discontent after the dismissal by the Congress of Martín Vizcarra as president.

During the protests in Lima, some carried posters criticizing, among other things, the legislators and Manuel Merino, who assumed the presidency on November 10 and resigned this Sunday.

This Monday, the plenary session of Congress will meet again from 2 in the afternoon to elect a new board of directors since this Sunday there was no consensus.

General elections are scheduled for April 2021.

The demonstrations in the Andean country began this week, after the Congress declared the vacancy of the presidency, considering that Vizcarra incurred in moral incapacity to exercise the position.

On repeated occasions, the former president has denied the accusations.
