Doctors at the Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon today (Monday) determined the brain death of a four-month-old toddler whose parents are suspected of abusing him.
Yesterday, the Ashkelon Magistrate's Court extended the two's detention until Thursday this week.
The parents, who deny harming the baby, were allowed to visit him at the hospital last weekend.
During yesterday’s court hearing, police posted 22 WhatsApp messages the parents sent to each other and their relatives.
According to the police representative, the father received a doll to illustrate what happened at home, but he ruled out the possibility of harming the child even when the interrogators slapped him for lying about the events.
Police claimed that the toddler arrived for treatment with irreversible brain damage and that it was not an injury resulting from the accident.
Last Friday, the toddler's parents received special permission to visit him at Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon, where he was hospitalized in a very serious condition.
After the visit, the two returned to detention.
Permission for the visit is given after an assessment of the situation of the police due to the condition of the toddler.
The two arrived at the scene separately and under police security.
In addition, physical contact of the parents with the toddler is avoided.
As you may recall, the toddler's father hospitalized him in Barzilai suffering from a severe head injury and internal injuries.
Following suspicion by the medical staff, the hospital called the police.
The father was then questioned on suspicion of harming him and causing him serious injuries.
The toddler has since been left in the hospital for tests and for the staff to look after him.
Later, the baby's mother was also arrested.
