Hurricane Iota made landfall along the northeast coast of Nicaragua at 10:40 pm EST, according to a special update from the US National Hurricane Center.
Iota has winds of 249 km / h, which makes it a major category 4 high-level hurricane.
The landfall occurred near the city of Haulover, Nicaragua (about 30 miles south of Puerto Cabezas).
The place where Hurricane Iota made landfall is approximately 15 miles south of where Hurricane Eta made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane on November 3.

For the first time in recorded history, the Colombian islands of San Andrés and Providencia suffer the effects of a Category 5 hurricane.
The storm will carry "catastrophic winds, life-threatening storm surges and torrential rains" to Central America, the National Hurricane Center said.

Iota was the first Category 5 hurricane of this record season in the Atlantic.
It threatens many areas of Central America that are still recovering from the devastating effects of Hurricane Eta.
