In the Corona year 2020, many Germans were looking for a travel destination nearby.

But how does it look in 2021?

Are holidaymakers wandering off into the distance again?

The corona pandemic caused major restrictions in tourism in 2020.

Due to numerous travel warnings *, the planned vacation fell through in many places - instead, many Germans were traveling by car and visited travel destinations within their own national borders.

The Black Forest as well as the Baltic and North Sea were particularly popular.

But how does it look in 2021?

After all, many hope that there will be a vaccine next year and that traveling abroad will be easier again.

A survey and data on search queries on the Internet provide information.

Most popular travel destination in 2021: Not Italy, not Croatia, but ...

Hometogo, the search engine for holiday homes and apartments, matched 16 million search queries with an externally commissioned survey to find out where Germans are going in 2021.

The result: on the whole, many want to stay at home.

A total of

44.4 percent of the search queries

from the search period January 1 to October 27, 2020 were for

travel destinations in Germany

.

The most popular destinations are again the classic Baltic Sea, North Sea and Sylt.

In the same period in the previous year, Germany was the front runner with 27.55 percent of search queries - however, the proportion increased by 61.15 percent in 2021.

Travel destinations abroad will lose out in 2021: Croatia is in second place with just 11.05 percent of search queries - in the previous year it was 14.69 percent.

Italy ranks third with 7.79 percent compared to 11.58 percent in the previous year.

Holidays 2021: It's not just travel destinations that are changing - so is travel behavior

As the survey commissioned by Hometogo shows, Germans'

desire to travel

has not yet been broken:

70 percent of those surveyed want to travel within the next 12 months

.

61 percent would also be more likely to book a holiday home in 2021, while 31 percent would prefer a hotel.

According to the survey results, an overnight stay in a campervan is only an option for 3 percent of those surveyed - somewhat surprising after the camping boom in 2020. However, 71 percent plan to travel by car next year.

As far as the type of travel destination is concerned, most Germans will be drawn to a

beach

in the next year

(63 percent), but

national parks and nature destinations will

follow closely behind

(60 percent).

The wanderlust seem to take vacation with them into the new year.

City trips

are also not far from this,

with a share of 52 percent of those surveyed.
