The local economy is suffering from the consequences of the corona pandemic.
Now it's over for another traditional business: Schreibmayr writing culture ends after 194 years.
With the stationery shop Schreibmayr, Munich * is losing another traditional business.
The employees are taken over by the parent company.
Not the first victim of the corona pandemic *.
Munich
- The business has a proud history: In 1826, the gallantry and case worker
Johann Nepomuk Schreibmayr
submitted
a request to the City of Munich for a bookbinder's license.
At that time,
King Ludwig I had
been on the throne for a year.
In 1826 the regent brought the
Ludwig Maximilians University
of Landshut to the capital.
Munich
established itself as a metropolis with culture - and
Schreibmayr
established itself as a good address for
stationery
.
But even a long tradition does not protect against the consequences of the crisis.
At the end of January, the shop, which is now in the
Fünf Höfe
is tight after 194 years.
The sale runs until January 15th - with a discount of up to 50 percent.
Corona and lockdown: appeal to Munich residents to go shopping locally
More and more companies are
financially unable to
survive the
Corona crisis
.
These include well-known names such as Hotel Anna am Stachus and the Münzinger sports shop on Marienplatz.
Now, with
Schreibmayr
, another business is
falling victim to
the crisis - and the
Munich rental market
.
"It's a shame, the house has a long tradition," says Wolfgang Fischer (59) from City Partner, the association of inner city retailers.
The situation is currently particularly difficult.
“In the city center we usually have a symbiosis of retail, gastronomy and culture,” explains Fischer.
At the moment there is
not much going on,
even in the
pedestrian zone
, and there are
no
tourists
anyway.
Fischer appeals to the people of
Munich
: “Go shopping locally.” Christmas errands can now be done early and relaxed.
The trade association Bavaria, which
sees
hundreds of retailers in
Munich
alone in
danger due to the corona, is hoping for a
conciliatory final spurt
.

Any support comes too late
for
Schreibmayr
.
"The lease expires at the end of January, we decided against extending it," says Robert Brech, Holding Managing Director of the Kaut Bullinger Group.
In 1996 the company bought the stationery shop in the city center from the Planegger company Treuleben & Bischof.
Since 2001,
Schreibmayr has been
part of the
Fünf Höfe shopping mall
with its high-quality range
.
According to Brech, the fact that the business is now closing is due to an upcoming rent increase.
And: "
Of course
we were
not spared
from the
Corona crisis
either." Under these circumstances, the business no longer pays off.
Corona crisis in retail: Schreibmayr jobs are safe for the time being
The
Schreibmayr
employees
can breathe a sigh of relief: there
should be no
layoffs
.
"In future, they will all work in the
main Kaut-Bullinger building
on Rosenstrasse," explains Anne Krohn (35), the deputy sales manager in the main building.
There was also unrest there recently: the Austrian retail giant René Benko (Karstadt-Kaufhof) had bought the house.
This was announced by its
company Signa
in September.
Kaut-Bullinger remains in the building.
"Business continues as normal," says Brech.
In
trade union
circles, however, there is concern about the long-term future of employees.
Schreibmayr
says goodbye and thus joins the growing list of
corona victims
.
In addition to the aforementioned
Hotel Anna
and the more than 130-year-old
Sport-Münzinger
, the star restaurant
Werneckhof
in Schwabing also met.
Furthermore,
Jeans Kaltenbach
, where clothes have been on sale in the city center since 1953, has closed one of two shops.
The traditional
Donisl restaurant
on Marienplatz is closed.
In mid-October,
the lights
went out at the
Karstadt branches
in Nordbad and OEZ.
And
Karstadt Sports
in the pedestrian zone did not survive the crisis either.
