The Budget and Accounts Committee of the People's Assembly discussed today the investment budget of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and its affiliated bodies for the year 2021, estimated at 47 billion Syrian pounds.
In their interventions, the members of the committee called for increasing the support provided to university hospitals, reconsidering the mechanism of drug importation, supporting scientific research, updating scientific laboratories, supplying them with advanced laboratory and research equipment, improving university housing, and working to raise the degree of scientific classification for the Syrian certificate, reconsidering the mechanism of seconding faculty members to private universities and raising the salaries of workers In the higher education sector.
In response to the members' questions, Dr. Bassam Ibrahim, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, affirmed that the ministry’s work sector is large and huge and that the work is done within the available capabilities to serve the educational and health aspects, indicating that the unilateral coercive Western measures imposed on Syria have affected the supplies of medical devices and modern equipment. Until work is done on repair and maintenance as much as possible.
Minister Ibrahim indicated that a committee will be formed to study the pros and cons of the drug import system and submit proposals to head the government, indicating that the ministry is activating the incentives system for workers, the teaching staff and doctors working in the hospitals of the ministry.
On university housing, the minister pointed out that a draft decree was proposed to consider each university city as an independent body. He also indicated that the ministry had developed a plan for scientific research, research data, and a complete database of scientific research journals, master's and doctoral theses.
