Israel has begun formulating a strategy to open talks with the Biden government on the Iranian issue in order to try and influence the contents of a new nuclear deal with Iran that the new president is expected to try and promote, said two senior Israeli officials and two MKs involved.

"We do not want to stay out again," Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi said in a closed briefing to the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee last week, according to two Knesset members present in the room.

Ashkenazi said Israel should refrain from repeating past mistakes that left it isolated when the Obama administration negotiated the 2015 nuclear deal.

In 2013-2015, when the Obama administration and the other five powers were negotiating with Iran over the nuclear deal, Israel vehemently opposed the process and barely tried to reach an understanding with the White House on the contents of the agreement. Instead, Israel ran an international public campaign against the nuclear deal. Was Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech to the US Congress in March 2015. Netanyahu organized the speech with then-House Speaker John Bainer behind President Obama's back.

Ashkenazi said during a meeting of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that the approach taken during the Obama administration made Israel almost irrelevant to the process, causing it to have no ability to influence the final outcome and the contents of the nuclear agreement.

According to Knesset members present at the meeting, Ashkenazi noted that the Foreign Ministry estimates that the Biden administration will fulfill the election promise of the incoming president to try and renew the agreement with Iran.

The foreign minister stressed that Biden's advisers also know that the 2015 agreement had weaknesses that need to be tried and corrected.

Israeli officials said that the Foreign Ministry set up a special team headed by Minister Ashkenazi will focus on formulating a strategy how Israel can stay in the image of any future negotiations between the United States and the world powers and Iran, and how it can affect the position of the government Biden on the subject and content of the agreement.

Ashkenazi told the The Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee said that the goal was for any future agreement between the United States and the powers and Iran to include elements that were important to Israel. Preliminary with members of President Biden's staff. These are contacts designed to create channels of communication and not yet discuss policy.

Extreme line.

Within the Israeli government, there is no uniform policy on the Iranian issue.

Netanyahu has a more extreme line than Defense Minister Bnei Gantz and Foreign Minister Ashkenazi when it comes to a future agreement between the Biden government and Iran.

Israeli Ambassador to the United States Ron Drummer, who is considered Netanyahu's closest adviser, said this week that the Biden government would make a mistake if it tried to return to the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran.

It is therefore not clear whether the strategy that Ashkenazi will propose will be acceptable to Netanyahu.

Biden's stated position is to return to the 2015 nuclear deal if Iran recalls its violations and gives up the enriched uranium it has accumulated since the Trump administration withdrew from the deal.

In the second phase, Biden wants to discuss a broader and longer-term agreement with Iran.

Ashkenazi said at a meeting of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that the Iranians were preparing to resume negotiations with the United States even in a scenario where incumbent President Donald Trump would win the election.
