Copenhagen - The
corona
virus has broken out
on
mink farms
in
Denmark
.
A
corona mutation
had been found in fur animals on Danish farms, and people were also infected.
The government in Copenhagen then ordered this radical measure.
Millions of fur animals must be killed.
The so-called
cluster 5 variant of
the coronavirus had been classified as worrying by the Danish health institute SSI.
According to the institute, the mutation could have had an impact on the effectiveness of future corona vaccines.
However, several experts doubt whether the mutation could actually weaken upcoming vaccines.
The drastic arrangement caused a scandal.
The legal basis for the mass culling of all mink in the country - including those from farms without a corona case or outside the risk areas - was lacking at the time of the announcement at the beginning of November.
“We made a mistake.
There is no legal authority to ask
mink
breeders outside the 7.8 kilometer zones
to slaughter
their
mink
, ”said Agriculture Minister Mogens Jensen,

.
Jensen
announced his resignation on Wednesday
because of the killing of millions of minks
.
In the meantime, however, the government has found a parliamentary majority to legally safeguard the move.
According to a corresponding agreement, mink keeping in Denmark is also to be temporarily prohibited until the end of 2021.

The exact number of culled animals was not clear from the information provided by the authorities.

The cluster 5 variant classified as worrying was found in twelve people in North Jutland at the beginning of November.
Parts of Jutland were sealed off from the outside world.
But according to the Minister of Health, no new case has been discovered in the last two weeks of October.
Since Monday, residents have been allowed to drive across the municipal border again, but not to other parts of the country.
Corona mutation in mink - How dangerous is “Cluster 5” really?
Coronavirus on fur farm in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, at the beginning of the corona pandemic, an employee of a fur farm was infected with corona.
At first it was unclear whether an employee had actually contracted the mink.
But the Ministry of Agriculture in The Hague then confirmed the assumption.
The fur breeders got into trouble.
Regardless of the corona pandemic, all around 150 Dutch mink farms will have to cease operations by 2024 according to the decision of the Supreme Court.
