Covid-19: decrease in the number of cases but increase in the number of deaths in Europe, according to the WHO

The number of new Covid-19 cases in Europe fell last week for the first time in more than three months, but deaths in the region have continued to rise, WHO data released Wednesday, November 18, revealed.

In total, nearly four million cases have been recorded worldwide in the past week, causing the death of nearly 60,000 people, the World Health Organization said.

Europe, which on Tuesday saw its total number of infections pass the 15 million mark, remains the most affected region of the world.

Last week, that figure accounted for 46% of new global cases and 49% of deaths, according to the Organization's weekly epidemiological update.

With 1.84 million new cases, the pressure remained high in Europe, but the WHO points out that “

last week, for the first time in more than three months, the region saw a 10% drop in the number of weekly cases

”.

More than 29,000 new deaths were however recorded on the European continent during this period, an increase of 18% compared to the previous week.

The American continent, the second most affected region, has seen the number of cases increase by 40%, with more than 1.45 million new cases.

More than 19,1000 people have died in the past week.

The only region that saw a drop in the number of new cases and deaths in the past week was Southeast Asia.

More than 1.3 million people have died and more than 55 million have been infected since the virus first appeared in China late last year, according to an AFP tally from official sources.
