Thousands demonstrated today (Wednesday) in the Georgian capital Tbilisi in protest of the results of the parliamentary elections, while US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is visiting the country.

Pompeo, who will continue from the country in the South Caucasus to Israel as part of his long journey around the world, met with the president, the prime minister and the leader of the country's Orthodox Church, as well as with representatives of various organizations.

Pompeo told Georgia's prime minister, Georgi Gahariya, that he acknowledged "the pain caused by the occupation of your country."

He referred to the Russian military presence in two separatist districts in the country since the 2008 war.

The United States has traditionally supported Georgia in the face of Russia's expansion into the territory of the former Soviet republic, including with military assistance.

The US Secretary of State said that the United States would continue to support the construction of infrastructure in Georgia that would ensure "free and fair elections" and democracy.

The opposition in the country praised his visit.

"Georgia needs continued active American involvement to support its security and democracy in order to fend off Putin's aggression in this frontier country," one of the leaders of the opposition told Reuters.

Thousands of protesters formed a human chain in the city center, holding a huge state flag and posters that read "United States - Thank you for supporting our election" and "The election was forged by a Russian oligarch."

They meant Bidzina Ivanishvili, the leader of the ruling party, who made his fortune in Russia in the 1990s.

According to the October 31 election results, the ruling "Georgian Dream" party won 48.23% of the vote, while the largest opposition party, the United National Movement, received only 27.18%.

The opposition accuses the ruling party and its supporters of buying votes, threatening voters and observers and violations during the vote count.

Eight parties are planning to boycott parliament and are demanding re-elections.

The ruling party leaders deny the allegations, and international observers also say the election was competitive and that basic rights were largely maintained.
