A group of Republican senators this week sent a letter to US President Donald Trump asking him to publish before Joe Biden's inauguration, on January 20, a presidential decree that allows products from West Bank settlements to be marked as "Made in Israel."

Most of the international community considers the settlements to be illegal under international law, and does not recognize them as part of Israel.

Israeli law also does not apply to the settlements.

The Trump administration has taken several steps in the last four years to legitimize settlements and blur the distinction between them and Israel.

The letter was signed by Senators Tom Cotton, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and Kelly Loffler.

They also sent the letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Treasury Secretary Steve Manuchin and Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf - to whom the U.S. Customs Service responsible for labeling products is subject.

The four senators warned in their letter that a government led by Biden could re-adopt a policy of distinguishing between Israel and the West Bank settlements.

They wrote that if this happened, the products from the settlements would become a major target for BDS boycotts.

All American governments since 1967 have treated the West Bank and the Golan Heights as occupied territories, arguing that the settlements are illegitimate.

In 1995, following the signing of the Oslo Accords and the establishment of the Palestinian Authority, the Clinton administration issued guidelines stating that products from the settlements should be marked as "West Bank products."

The guidelines were never enforced, but in 2016 the Obama administration refreshed the guidelines and warned that labeling products from the settlements as "Israeli-made" could result in a fine.

At the time, the Obama administration's move seemed like a political signal to the Israeli government regarding the expansion of the settlements.

Senators have written in a letter to Trump that key members of the Democratic Party support the BDS movement and are looking for ways to cause economic damage to Israel.

"Your administration needs to repeal these Clinton-era guidelines," they wrote to Trump.

"Such a decision would constitute support for Israel and a blow to the anti - Semites and the BDS movement."

If Trump chooses to make such a move in the two months he has left in the White House, it poses another obstacle for Biden, who is expected to try to roll back a large part of Trump's decisions on the Israeli-Palestinian issue, especially on the West Bank settlement issue.

Today (Thursday) US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is expected to be the first US Secretary of State to visit a West Bank settlement.

Pompeo is expected to arrive at Psagot Winery in the Binyamin industrial zone near Ramallah to express support for the settlements.

Pompeo's visit was described as "private" and no Israeli official is expected to join it.
