The Centre for Health Protection announced tonight (18th) that it is investigating 7 outbreaks of upper respiratory tract infections, involving 7 primary schools, and a total of 168 school children and 1 staff were infected.

The center will conduct a new coronavirus test for the teachers and students of the affected classes, and recommend that the affected schools stop face-to-face classes and activities for no less than 7 days before the test results are obtained.

Schools affected by the epidemic include the private section of the prestigious Sacred Heart Canossian School, Hong Kong True Light Middle School (primary school) and Peiji Primary School.

A total of 400 schools or hospitals broke out this month

The Centre for Health Protection stated that as of 5 noon, 38 primary schools and 1 secondary school had reported outbreaks of upper respiratory disease in a single day.

This month, a total of 400 cases of upper respiratory disease outbreaks in schools or institutions were received, involving 3,760 people.

A total of 168 children in seven primary schools were infected with the disease today.

The Catholic Bird School in Kowloon Bay has the largest number of infected children, involving 31 people, including 18 boys and 13 girls, aged between 6 and 9.

They have had fever, cough, runny nose and sore throat since November 10. 25 of them have sought medical treatment; all are in stable condition and do not need to be hospitalized.

In the private section of the Sacred Heart Canossian School in Central and Western District, 29 female schoolchildren aged between 6 and 9 were infected. Another staff member was also recruited.

The remaining schools where the epidemic broke out were Lam Tin St. Edward’s Catholic Primary School, Shek Kip Mei Christian Hong Kong Lutheran Church Convinced School, Sha Tin Pei Kei Primary School and Yuen Long Long Ping Village Huizhou School.

There are 3 cases in the same class within 4 days that require suspension of classes for 7 days

The Centre for Health Protection stated that if there are three cases of infection in the same class within four days, it can be regarded as an outbreak of upper respiratory tract infection.

The center has provided advice to schools on the prevention of respiratory infections, and the above schools are under medical supervision.

For the sake of caution, schools with outbreaks of upper respiratory tract infections will be arranged to distribute deep throat saliva sample bottles, and the teachers and students of the affected classes will be tested for the new crown virus. Schools are advised to stop the affected schools before the test results are obtained. Face-to-face classes and activities shall not be less than 7 days.

The center reminds the public to pay attention to good personal and environmental hygiene to prevent influenza and other respiratory diseases.
