The IDF today (Thursday) presents the new defense system on the Gaza Strip border, which includes the underground wall that the IDF is building along the border, along with autonomous weapons backed by real-time intelligence gathering in the field.

The idea was first developed by the commander of the Southern Command, General Herzli Halevi, who proposed a combination of artificial intelligence, advanced sensors, and robots in the air and on land, which would secure the border area.

The need to improve defense arose in the IDF towards the end of the underground wall project against tunnels, which is located 60 kilometers along the Gaza Strip border and against the background of terrorist infiltrations from the Gaza Strip into Israel in the last decade from the sea, land and tunnels. Embark on an experimental activity called a "smart and deadly frontier."

The project was carried out in a six-kilometer section of the northern division of the Gaza Division, under the command of Colonel Yoav Brunner.

According to the project, a special Knesset is to be set up that will include observers, autonomous sensors for space and ground scanning, cyber and operating robots from the ground and air for collection and attack purposes. To streamline the development process.

As part of the field experience and the lessons learned from operating the robots, Col. Brunner was able to formulate a concept that received initial approvals from the Commander of the Southern Command.

According to his vision, the special force will carry out routine tasks, such as opening an axis or responding to suspicious events along the border, using autonomous vehicles and gliders that will take off from independent positions in the field, and return to charging stations without human contact.

The skimmers and vehicles will be equipped with sensors that can detect changes in the ground and target the Knesset soldiers with suspicious movements and processes in the field, such as tracks, sand piles, forgotten equipment and more. Terrorists who try to infiltrate, or autonomous vehicles armed against firearms such as heavy machine guns.

Some vehicles have a very high level of offense and are capable of chasing. Another part is even equipped with advanced means of collection.

A military source familiar with the details of the project explained that "the operational idea of a smart and lethal border makes it possible to raise the defense of IDF forces."

The multidimensional defense is not a substitute for fighters, but a tool in their hands designed to improve their ability to defend wisely. "The

IDF further clarified that the experience in the field includes the development of combat techniques and various weapons, to protect communities near the fence and forces.

According to estimates by the Southern Command, within six months there will be an initial system that combines all the capabilities.

After receiving the appropriate approvals, the system will be assimilated into additional sectors within the state borders.

Military sources explained that the combination of the multiplicity of sensors in the space will change the tools of the game in the defense system.

"Some of these sensors still exist today, but there is no single system that connects them," they explained.

"When one person detects a suspicious change in space, excavation in the ground or unusual movement, he knows how to bounce forces to the scene, and at the same time stage an attack using skimmers or autonomous vehicles."

The tunnel that was discovered - an attempt to test the IDF's readiness

During the presentation of the defense system, the IDF published preliminary photos from the tunnel that was uncovered on the Gaza border and excavated by Hamas. The tunnel is defined as the deepest tunnel excavated to date along the Gaza Strip border. Land that has developed in recent years in the Southern Command.

The documentation reveals that the tunnel was very stable and strong in concrete beams and additional infrastructure.

According to security sources, Hamas was able to reach a stage where there was already a shortage of oxygen and groundwater during the excavations - and yet it tried to get closer to the underground wall.

Other sources estimate that the tunnel was excavated in an attempt to investigate the IDF underground wall.

In 2018, 702 Palestinians from the Gaza Strip entered Israel and were arrested. .
