For around 30 years Fredl Grübers has been selling Christmas trees on the Gmund Festival Square.

But this year a lot is different.

The corona pandemic is also noticeable here.

  • For Fredl Grübers and his daughter, things are now entering the hot phase

  • They start selling their Christmas trees at the Gmund Festival Square

  • Because of Corona, a lot is different this year

Gmund

- The hot phase has begun for Fredl Grübers and his daughter Katharina (27): This Saturday (November 21), the father-daughter team starts its traditional Christmas tree sale on the Gmund Festival Square.

Fredl Gragt has been in this business for around 30 years - but this year a lot will be different: the 64-year-old with the distinctive mustache serves buyers with a mask for the first time, the distances must be maintained.

“We will still see that we make our jokes,” announces the Tegernsee.

For two days Gragt was busy unloading trees and putting them into position on the fairground.

His Christmas trees - mostly firs - come from Denmark.

"Now everything is ready, we are ready for the sale," says the happy 64-year-old, who is now retired and is still happy to support his daughter with the Christmas business.

“I just don't care,” says Grübers and laughs.

There is a disinfectant dispenser between the trees

But the mood will not always be so relaxed this year: Corona is omnipresent even when selling Christmas trees.

This is shown by a disinfectant dispenser and a sign asking customers to keep the necessary distance.

"If that doesn't work, we'll tell people to put on a mask - most of them have it under their chin anyway," says Gragger.

He and the other salespeople will wear mouth and nose protection by default.

After all, you never know how close you will get to the customer.

Despite the pandemic, Grübers goes into this Christmas tree season with confidence.

The Tegernsee does not believe in the big boom - as some have already prophesied because many people are spending Christmas Eve at home this year.

But a decent business.

"Christmas is not canceled because of Corona," says the Tegernsee.

Because of lockdown: Hotels and restaurants are still waiting to place their orders

However, the Christmas tree retailer has noticed uncertainty among the catering establishments and hotels: Because the industry cannot currently predict how long the lockdown will drag on, many have postponed ordering the Christmas trees, reports Gragger.

After all, where there are no guests, there is no need for a Christmas atmosphere.

“I can understand that the hotels and restaurants don't lean out of the window, because a tree like that costs a lot of money,” says Gragger.

But there is still time until the big festival: Every day until just before Christmas, Grübers and his daughter can be found by their trees on the Gmund Festival Square.

The sale of Christmas trees will not be over until December 24th.

“All that's left to do is clear up,” announces the Tegernsee.
