After the plague struck large parts of it, Eilat tries to come back to life, with the declaration of it as a non-tourism that is allowed to operate despite the corona restrictions.

Traffic jams were not seen at the entrance to the city yesterday, nor were thousands of tourists in restaurants and shopping centers, but hotel receptionists still felt a bit overwhelmed, and vacationers are slowly returning to the city with the highest unemployment rate in the country.

The feeling is mixed: business owners and hotel managers see a ray of light at the end of the tunnel, but fear that another closure will cause a total economic collapse.

Already in the early morning hours, the staff of Sheba Hospital managed to set up a checkpoint for employees and suppliers who were on their way to Eilat, and the Home Front Command personnel supervised the rapid inspections of the Sofia company.

In all, more than 300 residents of the area managed to pass the test by noon, and about a thousand in total throughout the day.

The process was very orderly and relatively quick, and order was maintained despite the not-so-simple birth cords that accompanied it: In the morning, the wait for results was longer than 20 minutes due to a power outage in the lab.

The delegation center on behalf of Sheba Hospital in Tel Hashomer, Amit Gutkind, believes that the rapid tests will be a great success.

"We actually have one goal: to help the city of Eilat open up, to return to routine. We consider this a national task," says Gutkind, clarifying: "The complex will be open 24 hours, and we are here to strengthen the residents. There are three registration stations, sampling and laboratory, and we "They are able to give an answer within 20 minutes. The test is reliable and has passed approvals from the Ministry of Health. They will give an excellent answer to the residents of Eilat."

Efrat Segal, a resident of Kibbutz Yotvata, arrived for the check-up early in the morning, a matter of a little "oppressive", she said.

The reason for her arrival is a medical examination she has to undergo in Eilat.

"The procedure is complex, but it must be done," she admits.

Golan Bohdana also arrived early for the quick check, for fear that a queue would develop there later in the day.

"The test is fast and it's good, the question is what will happen next," he says, "Every week I will have to come here - in the end it is stressful, but it is better for everyone to do the tests. For the peace of Eilat residents."

After passing the first checks on the way to Eilat, you arrive at the checkpoint, and tens of meters before it, the ushers, security guards and inspectors are already identified.

About twenty of them are stationed, stopping every vehicle that arrives.

"Not a single vehicle passes us without checking all the passengers," they say.

They manage - without creating traffic jams at the entrance to the city - to catch even those who did not arrive with the requested test results.

According to them, "there were dozens of them in the last few days who did not enter the city of Eilat, and we surrounded them."

Beside them are policemen, who only observe from the side and only in case of disorderly conduct enter the picture.

Like an island in Greece

"Iltos", the vacationers in the city call the new green island.

"It's like an island in Greece," says Rachel, a vacationer who came from the center of the country. "It's time for us to vacation in Eilat, now we feel completely safe."

At the entrance to the city stands one of its oldest restaurants, "Papi", El Gaucho in the past.

Yonatan Shachar, the owner of the place, has been waiting for this moment for a long time.

He hired the workers again, cleaned, tidied up, but he also understands that the road to routine is still long.

Because of the restrictions that prohibit him from opening the enclosed space in the restaurant, he found a creative solution in the form of three outdoor complexes he opened near the restaurant, one of which used to be a nightclub.

"In the second closure, we did not work for two months, we started the reopening. It's like going up to second grade after we went up after the first closure to first grade. There is excitement," says Shahar.

The excitement is evident in him and the restaurant staff on the occasion of the reopening.

"Our economic damage is huge. The restaurateurs were in trouble, and the green island is a gift: go back to work and hope the tourists come. We have lost a lot of money lately, today the color will return to the eyes and there will be fun in Eilat and the restaurant," he is sure.

Ronen Moore, the owner of the Ginger and Pago Pago restaurants, became a mouthpiece for all his colleagues in Eilat, and during the closure he served as chairman of the Association for the Promotion of Restaurants and Bars in the city. This week he also bought new tables and chairs to place outside, in public. In the Eilat municipality area. He also claims that the layout is not perfect, but at least gives a chance for a better future after the economic chaos that has passed over the city.

"We are excited," he says.

The city is coming back to life, hotels are reporting full occupancy over the weekend.

There are restaurants that have not opened yet because they have not yet made the preparations and there are some that will not open either due to financial problems.

We'll be spread out on the sidewalk - it's hard, [but] we restaurateurs reinvent ourselves. "However, he is disappointed that hotels enjoy the ease that restaurants do not get:" We have to open outside, and dining rooms in open hotels in closed spaces, need to change It is, "he says."

He concludes with optimism mixed with apprehension. "There was a catastrophe in Eilat economically, it (the outline - YI) gives the opportunity to restart, it's wonderful.

Feel the air again

The Royal Garden Hotel opened yesterday morning, and only half of the hotel is full at the time of writing.

However, the hotel managers believe that the occupancy will be full by next week.

Among the guests is Verde Zwilling from Raanana, who explains that she definitely also came with the aim of helping local tourism.

"We did corona tests and we know how to borrow a green city, and we keep the guidelines," she said.

Some of the vacationers in the city are actually satisfied that the query is not yet complete.

"I have never seen such an empty Eilat," says Nir Gigi, who came with his family from Haifa on vacation, although he had doubts whether it would actually come to fruition.

"We booked [rooms] two months ago, and we were not sure it would happen. Pretty calm, there is good sun, the rules are observed, everyone here is strict."

At the Royal Beach Hotel, on the other hand, the reception and reception hall are almost full, and there are no rooms available.

The hotel opened as early as Tuesday, and by Thursday morning occupancy was close to 80%.

The hotel's pool was full of holidaymakers who follow the guidelines, and keep their distance.

As a rule, everyone in hotels understands that morbidity in the city will cause further closure of tourism, and here too the workers go through and check that the guidelines are observed.

"It's feeling air again, it's another life."

Overall, more than vacationers breathe a sigh of relief - it is the hotel workers who have returned to work who feel this way.

"Staying at home without a job and without a full salary due to spending on sick leave caused many of them financial hardship." What they paid in sick leave is not enough, and now they are returning to normal work. We sat at home for two months, I did not know what to do, it was really hard and tough, , Manager of the food and beverage counter at Royal Beach.

Now, he is clearly excited to be back at work, and the smile hardly leaves his face.

"It feels good. It's feeling air again, it's another life," he says.

The hotels in the city expect that next week there will be almost no available room in the city.

Vacationers, they say, will quickly understand a green query and will not be afraid to come.

"The people of Israel need to be given the time and it will do its thing, Israeli tourists feel a green and safe vacation here," says Etty Carhali, VP of Human Resources at the Isrotel chain. "2,500 Eilat residents who work in hotels and tourism have returned to work.

Everyone is happy and excited about the reopening, after a difficult period for the employees. "

"We will work to open up the education system first and foremost."

Opening of the Big Center in Eilat, today

The mayor of Eilat, Meir Yitzhak Halevi, also believes that the huge unemployment that was in the city will pass, and the thousands of unemployed will return to work.

"I am very happy that in all logic and common sense together with determination and adherence to the goal, led to the approval of the law and the declaration of Eilat as a 'green island'. Opening the city of Eilat will undoubtedly help the city's economy and especially the mood of thousands of residents." On the step.

He said, "As time goes on and as we demonstrate our health resilience thanks to a system of municipal actions and especially due to personal responsibility and self-discipline required of residents and vacationers, we will work to open first and foremost the education system with emphasis on middle schools and other unapproved parts, all while maintaining our health resilience. "I lovingly invite the people of Israel to come to Eilat, to spend time and enjoy the beauty of Eilat, attractions, restaurants, shopping centers and beaches."
