"We're all going to go crazy": in Petit-Nanterre, the construction site gets on the nerves of tenants

In full containment, the work carried out in the underground car park, bought by the Aldi brand, of a public housing building puts tenants at

INSUPPORTABLE.

The word has been inviting for three weeks in all the sentences Belkacem pronounces.

The reason for this sudden twitch of language?

The din of the jackhammers, which rots the daily life of this tenant confined to his residence on the Place des Muguets, in the heart of the Petit-Nanterre district (Hauts-de-Seine).

"This noise must stop," implores this accountant by profession whose apartment, in this period of confinement, also serves as an office.

"It starts at 8:30 am in the morning and it lasts non-stop until 4:30 pm At this rate, we will all go crazy…"

In question: the site which aims to completely renovate the underground car park of the building.

A car park where around twenty workers have been working since its takeover by the German distribution brand Aldi.

Its opening is imminent.

"It's very good that there is a new supply of shops in the neighborhood," Belkacem breathes, his features drawn.

But we cannot be made to pay such a price.

I'm supposed to be telecommuting but the truth is, there is nothing I can do.

Sometimes I complete ten certificates in a single day to escape the noise.

And beyond my case, there are families with newborns, sick people in the building.

Refugee in the common areas

On the same level in fact, Hiba, epileptic, ensures that she feels all the trouble in the world to give herself the rest she needs.

"During the day, it's impossible," she regrets.

A pause to let pass a long volley of jackhammers and the young woman continues: “We asked for a schedule.

We were hoping for a half-day of work but all we got was a little delay of half an hour.

"

Initially scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., work now takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Half an hour that doesn't mean much to these distraught tenants.

Like this mother of a family, infant in her arms, sitting in the stairwell.

Supporting this gesture, she explains that she prefers the discomfort of the common areas where the noise is more bearable rather than staying in her apartment.

"With me, it is unlivable, the baby does not sleep", she sums up, sorry.

Two petitions have already been sent to the lessor, Logirep, so that a solution can be found.

In the meantime, it is towards the caretaker's office, on the ground floor of the building, that tenants' complaints converge.

"It has become the office of tears," the latter squeaks, admitting in passing that he cannot do much.

The old mini-market had been closed for three years

Contacted, the lessor, who has invested nearly a million euros in the renovation of the parking lot and the resumption of the slab, also recognizes its powerlessness.

“We are aware of the situation and of the significant nuisance caused by this project, but we have very little room for maneuver.

A little more patience is needed.

If everything goes according to plan, everything should be finished by the beginning of December.

The city of Nanterre, which fought for the arrival of the German brand in Petit-Nanterre, insists for its part on the benefits of the establishment of such a business in the district.

"It has been three years now that there is no more supermarket in Petit-Nanterre and the arrival of this business was among the campaign commitments", recalls the entourage of the mayor (DVG), Patrick Jarry.

The tenants of the Place des Muguets residence do not see that far.

They just fear that the work will stretch far beyond next week.
