Primary schools in Hong Kong will be suspended for two weeks starting today, but there are still outbreaks of upper respiratory tract infections in primary schools.

The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health announced today (23rd) that 7 primary schools and 1 secondary school had outbreaks of upper respiratory tract infections within two days. The number of people affected reached 32 people, including Leung Shing Tak, the former Prime Minister’s Association of Pok Oi Hospital in Yuen Long. School, Po Leung Kuk Children’s Group in Wan Chai District.

Pok Oi Hospital’s previous Premiers’ Association of Liang Shengde School stated on its website that 3 students in class 4A and 3 students in class 4C had asked for leave due to symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection.

The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health is investigating two outbreaks of upper respiratory tract infections involving a primary school and a children's home.

The primary school involved is the Leung Shing Tak School of the Pok Oi Hospital in the third phase of Long Ping Village, Yuen Long. There are 15 males and 8 females infected with the disease, aged between 6 and 9 years old; 14 of them have sought medical treatment and all are in stable condition. No admission is required.

The earliest date of onset of school children is November 14. Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose and sore throat.

Pok Oi Hospital’s previous premiers’ Friendship Association Liang Shengde School stated on its website that 3 students in class 4A and 3 students in class 4C had asked for leave due to symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections. The school took the initiative to notify the Health Protection Center.

According to the instructions of the Center for Health Protection and the Education Bureau, the whole class of 4A and 4C will suspend face-to-face classes for no less than seven days starting from November 24. The resumption date has yet to be notified by the Center for Health Protection.

The Centre for Health Protection will later distribute deep throat saliva test sample bottles to students in classes 4A and 4C and related staff for testing.

The other school is the Po Leung Kuk Children’s Group at 66 Leighton Road, Causeway Bay. The school has 10 boys and 17 girls who have been infected, aged between 9 and 17. Among them, 21 have sought medical treatment. All are in stable condition, and 1 needs to be admitted to the hospital.

The earliest date of onset of school children is October 31. Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose and sore throat.

From November 21 to 5 pm today, there were 9 outbreaks, including 7 primary schools and 1 secondary school, involving 32 people.

The center strongly urges the public and staff of institutions/schools to be vigilant and maintain personal and environmental hygiene at all times.
