Already 900 students and the G9 is still to come: the grammar school is to get a new house

Six years after it opened, the Holzkirchen State Gymnasium is bursting at the seams. The rush is huge. And the biggest cliff is already in sight, full occupancy as a nine-level grammar school (G 9), effective in 2025. The district reacts: An additional building is to be built for 2.3 million euros.

Holzkirchen -

Axel Kisters takes a deep breath when he thinks of those days in spring.

Again, so many children had registered at the State Gymnasium Holzkirchen that the headmaster had to formulate a number of rejections.

In the previous years, Sauerlachern and Dietramszellers had to shake their heads, and later also children from the south of the district.

This year the bitter message hit 39 families, including eight children each from Warngau and Valley.

"This is the north of the district, this is our Gäu, these are our students," sighs Kisters.

Tears flowed from the rejected.

"That hurt."

The registration numbers, however, force selection.

Of the 120 children who got a place in one of the four fifth grades in autumn, 108 come from Holzkirchen and Otterfing.

Only the remaining twelve places went to siblings from other district communities.

The school was built in the G8 era for 800 students, and there are already 922 in the building.

“We all pulled our reserves of space,” says Kisters.

When the G 9 takes full effect in 2025, there will be an additional year that was not even considered in the construction concept.

"When it was decided to return to the G 9 in 2017, I applied to expand the school building the next day," says Kisters.

A new building for the Holzkirchen grammar school is planned behind the gym

Now there is no more time to waste.

On Wednesday, November 25th, the die is to be cast: The district committee decides on a proposal from the district administration to place an extension with four large classrooms in the southeast of the Holzkirchen school grounds, between Erich-Kästner-Strasse and the gym.

The building should offer the possibility of adding another four classrooms later.

Franz Weber from the finance and property management of the district office estimates the costs at 2.3 million euros.

540,000 euros are to be expected in government grants.

The State Gymnasium Holzkirchen, the third of its kind in the district, was conceived as a three-class G8 school.

In fact, the demand was so great that five entry-level classes became the norm before Kisters had to brake.

Grades 5 to 8 are currently four courses, the classes above are five courses, the Abitur year three courses.

The school has 27 classrooms.

Already far too little to meet demand.

"We had to convert specialist and common rooms into classrooms," says Kisters, "otherwise it wouldn't work."

Can a future high school in Sauerlach dampen the rush?

According to Kisters, the dynamic growth of Holzkirchen and the influx of people from the metropolitan region suggest that more space will soon be needed.

"We would like it to be six to eight more classrooms." The planned new building requires longer distances on campus, "thanks to our double-lesson system that shouldn't be a problem." It is conceivable that part of the new building would be To accommodate upper school.

“But that's a long way off,” says Kisters.

In the medium term, a new state high school in Sauerlach (district of Munich), which is only a few minutes by S-Bahn from Holzkirchen and Otterfing, could provide some relaxation.

At the beginning of November, the Bavarian Ministry of Culture gave its approval for the new school, and operations could start in 2026 at the earliest.

However, it is unclear whether, in view of the urgent need in the southern district of Munich, pupils from the district of Miesbach will even be accepted.
