The modernization of the Geretsried city library continues.

The craftsmen have started their work.

Before that, 7,000 books had to be packed.

Geretsried -

Only the inscriptions on the walls show where the vice-library manager Anja Hagen is.

There is no trace of crime novels, thrillers, novels and magazines in the back of the city library.

The books are gone, as are the shelves on which they usually stand and even the carpet on which the shelves used to stand.

The last part of the renovation work has started on Adalbert-Stifter-Straße.

After the youth and children's area, the crime, fiction and magazine departments are now given a new, modern face.

The concept again comes from Schulz-Speyer-Bibliothekstechnik.

It is based on the design that has already been implemented.

The adult area is by no means identical.

"There are a few subtleties and surprises waiting," promises library manager Björn Rodenwaldt.

There is currently no sign of this.

In the hallway and in the three rooms behind the entrance to the library, the floor was just being sanded.

“The painter comes next, then the new carpet is laid,” explains Hagen.

While the craftsmen are behind a dust curtain, the library continues to operate with separate opening times.

The adult readers can still find current books on the ground floor.

If members want to borrow other works, they can call in advance.

"If we get it, we'll get them out," says Hagen.

Partly this offer of the library is used, but partly the members would now use the opportunity to deal with the online loan and e-books.

In preparation for the renovation, six library employees and one person on loan from the indoor pool, which is currently closed due to the coronavirus, packed the media from the crime, fiction and magazine departments in so-called turtle boxes, i.e. rental boxes made of plastic, for two days .

“They cannot be compared with moving boxes,” says Hagen about their stability.

Almost 100 pieces filled with around 7000 novels and magazines are piled up in the gaming room.

A good 20 more boxes are still folded up ready.

“This is where the returns come in, which we will sort in at the end after the renovation.” Thanks to the roles of some of the shelves, the team didn't have to pack all of the reading material.

“We pushed them into the elevator and drove them to the basement,” reports Hagen.

Thrillers, cookery and handicraft books are available at the front.

Travel guides, however, ended up further back.

"They are not in great demand in winter."

Before the packing campaign, the library team called out: “Lend us empty.” The limit of 30 media per reader card was temporarily suspended.

“Almost 2000 books were loaned out, which really made our work easier,” reports Hagen.

The loan period was also extended beyond the construction period.

"Some thought at home that there was a mistake on the receipt," reports Rodenwaldt, who then explained that the media would actually only have to be returned in January.

The modernization costs 68,000 euros.

"50 percent are funded by the Free State of Bavaria," said the library manager.

The redesigned area is to be opened on December 22nd.

So far, work is going according to plan.

Rodenwaldt: "It looks very good."
