The hotel des Grands Boulevards in Paris, the expert opinion of Figaro

2020-11-24T17:45:58.890Z

Housed in a building dating from the Revolution, this four-star hotel with 50 rooms discreetly reproduces the rural setting of the Petit Trianon. An oasis of calm in an area filled with bars and theaters.

8/10 for the hotel des Grands Boulevards

Inaugurated in 2018, the Hôtel des Grands Boulevards is the second hotel establishment of the Experimental Group, known in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris for its Experimental Cocktail Club.

The four-star hotel occupies a building built shortly before the French Revolution on the site of an old garden.

A historical origin discreetly evoked in the decoration of the 50 rooms where the Marie-Antoinette spirit reigns.

Parisians are especially familiar with its two cocktail bars (one of which is on the roofs) and its restaurant under a huge glass roof.

8/10 The situation

The hotel has many theaters and bars with terraces as neighbors.

Somewhat noisy neighbors who hardly disturb the tranquility of the hotel.

The establishment is one of the few of the Grands Boulevards to have an entrance set back from the roadway, a promise of rare calm in this central district of Paris.

On foot, the Opera and the Department Stores are 15 minutes away, the Tuileries Garden 20 minutes.

The Grands Boulevards metro station (lines 8 and 9) is located right in front of the entrance.

9/10 The decor

The decoration multiplies the references to royalty, without however reproducing the golden splendor of a Palace of Versailles.

It is signed Dorothée Meilichzon, interior designer who also imagined the decor of the Hotel Panache and the Grand Pigalle (the group's first hotel, inspired by the Grand Budapest Hotel) in Paris.

In the rooms, the Marie-Antoinette spirit reigns, like this bouquet of dried flowers evoking the rural setting of the Petit Trianon in Versailles.

The desks are in red marble, a material prized by King Louis XVI.

On the floor, the carpet has the same patterns as the castle parquet.

To the delight of the eyes, the walls are coated with red lime and matt green.

In the bathrooms, the earthenware tiles form honeycombs of bees - another symbol of royalty.

8/10 The bedrooms

Whether facing the patio or the boulevard, the 50 rooms are perfectly soundproofed.

Some of them have a balcony.

In the lower categories (Petit Boulevard and Saint-Fiacre), the bedrooms and bathrooms are quite spacious (from 14 m²) and have a high ceiling.

The rooms on the fourth and last floor, fitted out in the attic, are undoubtedly those with the most character, even if they can be criticized for not attracting enough daylight.

The beds, covered with 100% cotton handcrafted in Brittany, are crowned with a majestic canopy that runs up to the ceiling.

Each room has a coffee maker, hairdryer, bathrobes, slippers and a radio which, on our arrival, greets us with jazz.

The mini-bar contains some creations concocted by the Experimental Bar.

6/10 The service, the facilities

To adapt to the current health context linked to Covid-19, the hotel has set up room service.

Cocktails, dinners and breakfasts can be served in your room, even when the bars and restaurant are open to the public.

If the bar and the restaurant constitute places of life in their own right, we regret the absence of equipment such as a wellness area or a gym to entertain customers.

Fortunately, there is no shortage of occupations in the neighborhood.

8/10 At the table and at the bar

Cocktails are the hallmark of the Experimental Group.

No wonder its cocktail bar, the Shell, is a popular address for mixology enthusiasts.

The recipe book written by the group's founders is also available in each room.

On the menu, around fifteen original creations divided into three categories: alcohol-free (€ 10), moderate alcohol volume (€ 14) and classic alcohol volume (€ 16).

The bar's signature, the Old Cuban, is not on the menu, but bartenders will be happy to make it on request.

.

A second bar, the Shed, is located on the fourth and last floor.

Cocktails are normally served there until 2 am.

The surrounding buildings block our view, but we nevertheless appreciate the calm of the place, preserved from the traffic noise of the great boulevards.

The restaurant, set in a patio under a retractable glass roof, serves French cuisine influenced by the Italian origins of chef de cuisine, Giovanni Passerini, and the Japanese origins of executive chef, Sho Ashizawa (see dinner menu).

Count around fifty euros for a dinner consisting of a starter, a main course and a dessert.

To accompany it all, we can count on a strong wine list of 600 references.

A brunch is offered every Sunday from noon to 2:30 p.m. at the price of € 36.

8/10 The price-quality ratio

Prices start at € 199 per night in a Petit Boulevard or Saint-Fiacre room and are set at € 299 in a Junior Suite, without breakfast.

The Escapade Parisienne offer (from € 228) includes two breakfasts, a 15% reduction on dinner and a late check-out until 2 p.m.

Perfectly justified prices for such a central four-star.
