He is "
satisfied
" that this summit organized this weekend by Saudi Arabia gave rise to "
a strong commitment
" in the final communiqué "
to make vaccines against Covid-19 a global public good, and to promises financial for the Covax even if the lack of money remains,
”said Stéphane Dujarric.
$ 4 billion required for Covax
The global immunization program, dubbed Covax and co-led by Gavi (Vaccine Alliance), still needs some $ 4 billion to ensure equitable distribution of vaccines and medical equipment.
"
On the debt, the final
press
release is a step in the right direction but the secretary general finds it insufficient,
" added the spokesperson during his daily press briefing.
"
He would have liked to see more global initiatives on debt and liquidity,
" he said.
G20 leaders "
promise to implement
" an already adopted debt service suspension initiative that allows poor countries to defer interest payments until June 2021.
Before the summit, Antonio Guterres had called for this suspension to be extended to middle-income countries in great difficulty and to be extended until the end of 2021. The G20 did not follow it, confining itself to wanting to “
examine
” this question in the spring.
"
On the issue of climate change, he is disappointed by the final language which does not reflect the global movement observed in the business community and among several governments with regard to carbon neutrality
", finally noted the spokesperson of the UN Secretary General.
In their press release, the major powers of the G20 simply promise to "
face the most pressing environmental challenges
".
