The black-red coalition has agreed on a binding quota for women on executive boards.

In the executive boards of listed companies with equal co-determination and with more than three members, one member must in future be a woman.

A comment by Kathrin Braun.

The paradox of the women's quota: It often gives women the feeling that they are being discriminated against.

No woman wants her position to owe to a law.

No woman wants to sit on the board of a company just because the coalition has finally agreed on a binding quota after a long dispute.

Of course, women just want to be judged on their performance.

However, a quick look at the facts is enough to see that without a quota for women, this remains a wishful thinking.

According to the Institute for Economic Research, not even every tenth position is occupied by a woman on the executive boards of the 200 top-selling German companies.

Worse still: The proportion on Dax boards even fell last year.

Here, however, an encouraging figure: the proportion of women on supervisory boards is around a third.

The reason: a mandatory quota of 30 percent has been in place here since 2016.

One thing is clear: the quota works.

It is also clear that companies do not make this progress voluntarily.

The non-binding option of setting targets has failed since 2016.

Political intervention is therefore justified now.

Of course, it would be desirable if the concrete role models could be broken at the expense of women.

That can be done with a modern family and education policy - and that should also be the long-term goal.

But without a quota for women, the road is too long.

It is sorely needed - simply because it creates opportunities for female role models.
