Through a videoconference with the participation of non-governmental, national and international organizations as well as accredited ambassadors in the country, the Government of Nicaragua presented this Tuesday a preliminary report on the damage caused by hurricanes Iota and Eta that This month they affected the Caribbean, the mining triangle and the north of the country.

The Minister of Finance and Public Credit, Iván Acosta, highlighted during his speech that approximately 3 million people were exposed to the two phenomena and damage was reported in 56 municipalities of the country.

According to the data presented by Acosta, the accumulated damages amount to US $ 617,433,000, and the losses in the economy reach US $ 121 million, for a total of US $ 738,602,000.

To that amount the minister added what he called the needs of those affected by the hurricane, bringing the total sum to US $ 742,671,000.

“That is what adds up to the 742 million dollars that the impact of preliminary damage and losses, because at this moment there are different institutions that are in the territory certifying and verifying this quantification.

We are certifying it with the World Bank, which, together with the European Union and ECLAC, are the ones that developed this instrument for assessing damage after catastrophic events, ”Acosta said.

According to the official, US $ 126,171,000 is reported in damage to homes, a total of 5,800 homes have been totally destroyed and there are 38,000 with partial damage.

According to the Minister of Finance, US $ 41,032,000 in damage to school infrastructure is also quantified, while the health sector reports losses of around US $ 12,629,000, including damage to the Puerto Cabezas Hospital.

While the losses in the agricultural sector are still being quantified, in the fishing sector the damages reach US $ 19,649,000.

The European Union, after the passage of Hurricane Eta, announced the activation of a payment of US $ 10.7 million to Nicaragua through an insurance supported by the cooperation of multiple donors that contributed to the creation of a trust fund.

For his part, the United States Ambassador to Nicaragua, Kevin Sullivan, reported through his Twitter account on November 17 that “USAID will provide an additional US $ 1.5 million to provide vital assistance to the communities in Nicaragua most affected by the Hurricane Eta and now Hurricane Iota ».

He added that the aid will be channeled through international humanitarian organizations.
