Diego Armando Maradona, the 10th Argentine, died this Wednesday at the age of 60.

Immediately, messages of farewell and affection from around the world flooded social networks.

Some of the most emotional came from the teams he played for and from his rivals as well, from colleagues and friends who faced him on the pitch decades ago.

The Italian Napoli, with whom Maradona played between 1984 and 1991, where he became a legend, wrote a couple of tearful tweets: “The world is waiting for our words, but there are no words to describe the pain we are going through.

Now is the time to cry (...) Always in our hearts, Goodbye Diego ”.

Brazilian star Edson Arantes do Nascimento, King Pelé, whose game has been the historical reference to compare Maradona's soccer greatness, also showed his grief at the death of “a great friend”.

"What sad news.

I lost a great friend and the world lost a legend.

Much remains to be said, but for now, may God empower family members.

One day, I hope we can play ball together in heaven, ”he wrote on Twitter.

Boca Juniors, his home in Buenos Aires, with whom Maradona won his first and only Argentine league title in 1981, dedicated four huge words to him:

“Eternal thanks.

Eternal Diego ”.

Eterno was also described by his Argentine archrival River Plate, the other Buenos Aires team, which Maradona rejected in 1981 to go to Boca Juniors and against whom he played his last official match, on October 25, 1997, at the Monumental in Buenos Aires.

"Goodbye, Diego", River Plate published on his Twitter account, accompanied by a portrait of the star with his year of birth and the lemniscate, the symbol of infinity, instead of the date of his death.

Farewell messages also came from footballers and former teammates from around the world, including historical figures of Argentine soccer.

Former striker Jorge Valdano, Maradona's teammate in the Albiceleste team that won the 1986 World Championship, burst into tears in full transmission from the Giuseppe Meazza stadium in Milan when he tried to remember his deceased friend.

"It has hurt me immensely for the player and for the man," Valdano said, before breaking in full transmission for Movistar.

"Even the ball is going to cry today."

“Fly high Diego,” wrote on Twitter Mario Alberto Kempes, the historic Argentine scorer and 1978 World Cup champion, whom River Plate signed in 1981 to counter the blow that Maradona's arrival at Boca Juniors entailed.
