A Greek-owned oil tanker was hit today (Wednesday) by a mine explosion off the coast of Saudi Arabia, a private security company said.

According to the announcement, a vessel owned by a Greek company was hit not far from Yemen, at the entrance to the Red Sea.

The blast caused damage to the tanker body, but no oil leak was reported.

The incident comes at a time of growing tension in the region, and two days after a cruise missile was launched from Yemen at an oil rig in Saudi Arabia.

Last year, several foreign tankers were attacked in the waters of the Gulf of Rape, in actions attributed to Iran, which denies this.
