2020-11-26T17:15:10.562Z

After SFR, which launched its 5G mobile network in Nice on November 20, it is Orange's turn to deploy its own with the aim of covering “more than 160 municipalities” by the end of the year.

We now know the date of the launch by the telecoms operator Orange of its 5G mobile network.

It is

“from December 3, 2020”

that it will be deployed in 15 French cities, including Nice, Marseille, Le Mans, Angers and Clermont-Ferrand.

"By the end of the year, more than 160 municipalities will be covered in 5G"

, announced the French group in a press release, promising speeds

"up to 3 to 4 times faster than 4G"

thanks to a broad spectrum in the 3.5 GHz frequency band.

Like Bouygues Telecom, Orange had so far communicated its 5G consumer and business tariff offers without announcing a specific geographic coverage plan.

Only SFR officially launched its latest generation mobile network in Nice since last Friday, while Free mentioned a launch in

“the coming weeks”

.

After having paid 2.789 billion euros to the State to seize

"blocks"

auctioned in early October, operators can enjoy their 5G frequencies since November 18.

However, they remain subject to administrative procedures linked to technical authorizations to be filed with the National Frequency Agency (ANFR) and to requests for information from town halls.

However, several green or left-wing mayors of large cities, notably in Lille or Grenoble, have declared themselves in favor of a moratorium until the publication scheduled for spring 2021 of a report from the National Health Security Agency (Anses) .

5G “respectful of cities and their position”

"The deployment will be done gradually and in a constructive dialogue with all the local authorities, in parallel with our efforts to expand the coverage of the French territory in 4G"

, indicated Stéphane Richard, CEO of Orange, quoted in the communicated.

"For

Paris, which has no moratorium, but has initiated a citizen consultation

, there will be no deployment of new 5G Orange antennas, as long as this process is not completed"

, he added. told the daily

Les Echos

, adding to be in favor of 5G

"respectful of cities and their position"

.

While 5G promises to ultimately offer up to 10 times faster speed, operators are counting above all on its launch to manage the increase in traffic and avoid saturation of their mobile networks.
