Two people were injured in an attack on a department store in the Swiss town of Lugano, local police said yesterday (Tuesday), arresting a woman who was known to authorities as a jihadist.

She stabbed one of the men in the neck and grabbed someone else by the throat.

The 28-year-old terrorist was arrested after passers-by took over until police arrived.

Eyewitnesses said she said she was a member of ISIS during the attack.

The federal prosecution in the Italian-speaking Canton of Ticini in southern Switzerland said an investigation had been opened on suspicion of a terrorist attack.

According to federal police, the terrorist was known from further investigations conducted in 2017.

One of the injured was seriously injured, but is not in danger of death, while the other was slightly injured.

Neutral Switzerland has not experienced major terrorist attacks like other countries on the continent, which have called for tightening EU border controls following a string of attacks in Paris, Nice and Vienna within a month.

However, it has identified hundreds of residents posing a threat and fighters who have joined battlefields around the world.

This month, two people were arrested near Zurich on suspicion of involvement in the shooting attack in Vienna, in which four people were killed.
