US President Donald Trump today (Wednesday) pardoned his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, who admitted to lying to the FBI during the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
This, after it was earlier reported that he had told his associates that he did indeed plan to do so.
"It is a great honor for me to announce that General Michael Flynn has received a full pardon. Congratulations to Flynn and his wonderful family. I know you will now have a truly fantastic Thanksgiving," the president tweeted on his Twitter account.
This is the most significant pardon Trump has granted since taking office.
Trump, who still refuses to acknowledge his loss to his Democratic rival, Joe Biden, in earlier this month's election, ordered his team to cooperate with Biden's team, but made it clear that the legal battle he is waging against the results will continue.

Flynn, a former military general, admitted in 2017 that he lied in his interrogation to the FBI, about his relationship with the Russian ambassador to the United States in the weeks before Trump took office.
He has since sought to withdraw the argument, making it clear that the plaintiffs violated his rights and forced him to agree to a plea agreement.

Flynn was one of several former Trump aides who pleaded guilty or were convicted at trial, following an investigation by former special adviser Robert Mueller into Russia's interference in the 2016 U.S. election to advance Trump's candidacy.
As early as March, the Republican president said he was considering pardoning Flynn, explaining at the time that the FBI and the Department of Justice had "ruined" the lives of Flynn and his family.
