The excitement was initially great, but the damage ultimately only minor: The man who rammed a gate of the Federal Chancellery in Berlin with a car on Wednesday has now been released from police custody.

The investigation into the case continued, said a police spokeswoman.

There are therefore no reasons for imprisonment or placement in a psychiatric facility.

The spokeswoman gave no information about the driver's motive.

The man drove his car into a gate in the secured area in front of the Chancellery on Wednesday during the Federal Cabinet meeting.

The vehicle and grille were slightly damaged in the incident.

There were no injuries.

Political slogans were written on both sides of the car.

A spokesman for the Federal Ministry of the Interior recently confirmed that the man had already rammed a gate of the Federal Chancellery in 2014.

In this incident, too, he had slogans on the sides of his car.
